The Command Block is a powerful tool in Minecraft that lets you automate tasks and create advanced mechanics. It cannot be crafted or found naturally in the game world. The only way to obtain it is by using a special command in a world with the correct permissions.

TL;DR: Enable cheats in your world, open the chat (press T), and type the command /give @p minecraft:command_block.

Compatibility: All Java versions • Permissions: Cheats Enabled • Platforms: Win/Linux/macOS

What is a Command Block?

A Command Block is a special block that executes a specified console command when activated by a Redstone signal. It’s the foundation for creators of adventure maps, minigames, and custom servers, allowing them to teleport players, change the weather, grant items, or display messages.

Why use it?

If you want to go beyond standard gameplay and start creating your own unique Minecraft experiences, the Command Block is essential. It allows for the creation of complex systems without needing to install mods or plugins, making it a perfect tool for learning game logic and basic programming concepts.

Requirements

  • Minecraft: Java Edition.
  • Cheats enabled on a single-player world or operator permissions on a multiplayer server.

Quick Start (2 steps)

  1. Activate Cheats: Create a new world with Allow Cheats: ON, or in an existing world, open the pause menu (ESC) → Open to LAN → Allow Cheats: ON.
  2. Use the Command: Open the chat (T), type /give @p minecraft:command_block, and press Enter.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1 — Make sure cheats are enabled

You cannot use the /give command on a standard survival world without permissions. You have two options:

  • When creating a new world: In the More World Options... menu, find and set Allow Cheats to ON.
  • In an existing world:
    1. Press ESC to open the game menu.
    2. Click the Open to LAN button.
    3. In the new screen, set Allow Cheats: ON.
    4. Click Start LAN World. Your permissions will be active until you exit the world.

Step 2 — Enter the command in the chat

  1. Open the chat window by pressing the T key on your keyboard.
  2. Type the following command exactly as shown:
    /give @p minecraft:command_block

  3. Press Enter. The Command Block will appear in your inventory.

What do the parts of the command mean?

  • /give: The base command for giving items.
  • @p: A target selector meaning “the nearest player” (which is you). You can also use your username.
  • minecraft:command_block: The ID of the item you want to receive.

Command Block Types

After placing the block on the ground and right-clicking it, you’ll open its interface. There, you can change its type:

  • Impulse: Orange, executes the command once every time it’s activated.
  • Repeating: Purple, executes the command every game tick (20 times per second) as long as it’s powered.
  • Chain: Green, executes its command only when a command block pointing into it has been executed.

Common Issues & Fixes

  • Command not working / “You do not have permission…”: Make sure you have correctly enabled cheats as described in Step 1. This is the most common problem.
  • I typed the command, but nothing happened: Check for typos. The command must be entered exactly. Also, ensure your inventory is not full.

Uninstalling / Reverting

A Command Block doesn’t require “uninstallation”. If you want to get rid of it, simply break it in-game like any other block. Note that you cannot break it in Survival mode without operator permissions and being in Creative mode.
